Chocolate-Filled Crunchy Bread Balls for a fun, clever and irresistibly delicious way to use up leftover bread for a delicious treat.
Crunchy on the outside and incredibly soft with an incredible gooey chocolate core on the inside, this recipe comes from one of those “nothing goes to waste” moments — a few slices of white bread, a bit of milk and some chocolate pieces hiding in the pantry. The result? A quick sweet snack that tastes like a cross between a warm chocolate pastry and a crispy fritter.
Only a few minutes to prepare, use simple ingredients, ideal for kids, guests, or anyone craving an easy homemade dessert.
Makes about 5-6 bread balls, Preparation 20 mins, Cooking 10 mins
- 5–6 slices of white sandwich bread
- Chocolate pieces (milk or white, for the filling)
- Cold whole milk — about 100 ml
- 2 eggs, whisked
- Flour, for dusting
- Breadcrumbs, for coating
- Peanut oil, about 300 ml, for deep-frying
Method
Soak the Bread
Place the slices of bread in a bowl and pour the cold milk over them.
Let them absorb it for a minute, then squeeze well to remove any excess liquid.
Shape the Balls
Take a small portion of the soaked bread, flatten it slightly in your hands and place a piece of chocolate in the center.
Close the bread around the chocolate and shape it into a tight ball.
Coat
Roll each ball in this order:
-
flour
-
whisked eggs
-
breadcrumbs
Fry
Heat the peanut oil in a small pot.
When hot (about 170–175°C / 340–350°F), fry the bread balls in small batches until golden brown and crispy.
Serve
Place them on kitchen paper to remove excess oil. Serve your Chocolate-Filled Crunchy Bread Balls immediately while the chocolate is still melted and gooey.
